I laid on my back, staring up at the star filled sky. "It looks so different" I thought.
Despite the unfamiliarness of my surroundings I felt comforted in the fact that at this same time she was probably staring at this sky too. Trillions of stars blinking nervously like the bright lights of Vegas.
"Ah, Vegas." That had been a fun weekend. Riding down there as fast as that old pick-up would go. The sleazy looking chapel offering the quickest marriages in the city.
Looking back it all seemed too good to be true. Now she was gone, child on the way. All I could do is count down the days.
"Shift change," I heard coming up behind me. As I stood up Steve nestled down where I had been sitting. I shouldered the my pack, picked up my gun, and secured my helmet on my head.
With one last look at the stars I started my short walk across the desert back to the barracks for a couple hours of sleep before breakfast.

An ever empty tunnel faces me
Forever vacant with it's obsidian walls
Now there's life teeming within it
My life
I careen down this tunnel
Looking for anything that can lead me back
Back to the surface
Back to the light
Back to the way things used to be
But it's hopeless
Things are just dark now
